#3 Georgetown vs. Syracuse
With Georgetown’s 1-0 win over Charlotte, the Hoyas are looking good for a run to the College Cup. But they have a couple more games to win first. Next up is Syracuse, who has beaten Cornell and VCU so far in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange got an early goal from Lars Muller against the Big Red and held on for the 1-0 victory. The game against VCU was very different. Syracuse went down early and it took a double overtime goal for Syracuse to get past the Rams. Georgetown will certainly be the toughest team the Orange have run into during the tournament. The Big East foes did not meet during the regular season or in the Big East Tournament. But they do know each other well and that is usually good news for the underdog. If the Orange can manage to maintain the potent Hoya strikers, they can at least stick around and make this a game. But Brandon Allen, Steve Neumann and Andy Riemer may be too much for the Cuse to handle.
Tulsa generally runs into trouble when they are involved in a low scoring affair. That is how one beats the Golden Hurricane. But Tulsa played in one of those low scoring affairs in the second round against South Florida and came away with a 1-0 overtime win. Against San Diego, Tulsa may not have to play a low scoring game. The Toreros beat a very good Cal State Northridge team in the first round and then shocked UCLA with a 5-2 victory in the second round. This is a team that is full of momentum right now. Patrick Wallen netted two goals against the Bruins and if San Diego can go to Westwood and score five goals, they can certainly go to Tulsa and advance to the quarterfinals.
