Cal Women's Basketball Fortunes
It could have been a battle for a No. 1 seed. It could have been a battle to stay away from Baylor in the national semis. It could have meant that Cal basketball has arrived.
Cal took care of business by beating USC Friday night, 78-59 and Stanford reciprocated with a 79-60 win over Washington State by the same margin. That is how close the two teams are. Stanford beat Cal at Cal in January and Cal came right back in the next game to beat Stanford at Stanford more easily. Unfortunately for Cal, they fell to no. 14 UCLA 70-58 Saturday night to end their hopes of facing Stanford in the Pac-12 women's final and perhaps earning a no. 1 seed.
But would Cal have earned a No. 1 seed had they won the tourney? Tough to say as they lost to Duke in December, but the game was at Duke and Duke still had Chelsea Gray who went down with a season ending injury in mid-February. In order for Cal to win big in the NCAA's their big three, Layshia Clarendon, Gennifer Brandon and Brittany Boyd, all must come up big. Boyd had 19 points in the win against Stanford but only nine in the loss. Cal is more athletic than most and that athletic dominance will be a huge factor in the NCAA's. Cal will now probably get a No. 2 seed in Spokane. They could face Stanford again in the NCAA's.
