#1 Connecticut vs. #2 Kentucky (Bridgeport, Connecticut)
UConn beat Kentucky 80-64 in the Elite 8 last March in Kingston, Rhode Island. They play Monday, once again in the Elite 8. The only difference is that the game is in Bridgeport, Connecticut in a sold out Arena at Harbor Yards. There will even be more UConn fans there than last year. UConn has 7 WNBA players on its team and they have the best coach in the history of women's college basketball in Geno Auriemma.
Kentucky is talented and deep with a solid young coach in Matthew Mitchell, but not talented enough to compete with UConn. Kentucky played 11 players against Delaware in the sweet 16 match up in a 69-62 win. UConn overwhelmed Maryland Saturday, 76-50 behind 17 points by Keleena Mosqueda-Lewis.
Kentucky's Jennifer O'Neill had 19 points on 4-9 shooting from 3. Auriemma will devise a defense which won't allow her to get the ball, especially as wide open as she was against Delaware. A'dia Mathies is the best player on Kentucky and had 16 against Delaware, but only on 5-13 shooting. She needs to step up, especially in 3's where she was 1-6 against Delaware, in order for Kentucky to be competitive. Auriemma noted that Kentucky was deeper inside and had better shooters than last year's version. But they are still not as talented as UConn, the only team which can challenge Baylor for a National Championship.
