2013 Baseball World Series Louisville Regional Breakdown

2013 Baseball World Series Louisville Regional Breakdown

Louisville, Miami (FL), Oklahoma State, Bowling Green

Louisville made a late charge this season to claim the Big East regular-season championship, but the Cardinals stumbled in the postseason tournament. That may have cost Louisville (46-12) a chance at one of the eight national seeds, but there is no doubt this team is still pretty formidable. The three previous times Louisville hosted a regional have produced mixed results, with a runner-up finish in 2010, a regional title in 2009 and a trip to the College World Series in 2007. Louisville possesses a devastating speed game, led by Adam Engel’s 40 stolen bases. All told, four players have 20 steals or more and a fifth player is in double digits. Ty Young has 26 steals to go with a .357 batting average, 74 hits and seven triples. Chad Green and Jeff Thompson are the Cardinals’ top pitchers, each with 2.09 earned run averages. Louisville is 31-5 at home.

Miami (36-23) got off to a tremendous start but stumbled big-time in Atlantic Coast Conference play, but to the Hurricanes’ defense the ACC is one tough baseball league. This is the 41st consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, but it may be a trip with one of the weaker offenses the Hurricanes have fielded. David Thompson has six homers and 43 runs batted in but his average is only .285 and Miami hit .260 as a team. Oklahoma State (39-17) withstood a topsy-turvy race in the Big 12 but finished second. The Cowboys make their first trip since 2011 to the NCAA, but it is their 39th trip overall. Oklahoma State hit .285 as a team, led by Zach Fish (.284-7-41) and pitcher Tyler Nurdin (4-3, 1.83 ERA). Bowling Green (24-29) finished fourth in the Mid-American Conference East but stormed through the postseason tournament. This is BGSU’s first trip to the tournament since 1999. Jeremy Shay (.328-5-37) is the team’s top hitter.
