Dorian Finney-Smith, Sophomore, Small Forward, Virginia Tech
Overview:
Virginia Tech is going to be a very young squad in 2011-2012 and it will be led by this freshman recruit. Dorian Finney-Smith is used to having a team run through him in high school so hopefully he is ready for the same thing at the next level. With the exception of point guard Erick Green, most of the contributing players for the Hokies will be very young and Finney-Smith is the best of the bunch.
His game is very flexible with size and length to play inside but also the ability to square up and play off the dribble from the top of the key. Scouts have said his main weakness, as with many incoming freshmen, is strength. He needs to get stronger and bulk up to constantly play down low in the bruising ACC and to prepare for the NBA as well.
Final Projection:
It is yet to be determined if Dorian Finney-Smith can turn himself into a player with major strengths or let himself settle into a jack of all trades and a master of none. The former would be great for his draft prospects. Our draft ranking represents the very real chances of the latter occurring though and the unknown in general of how Smith’s game will translate and improve.
