Georgetown Hoyas
Big East
Coming off of their amazing 2012 season, the expectations were very high for Georgetown heading into this season. So it was disappointing when the Hoyas lost to California and New Mexico early in the 2013 campaign. However, in retrospect, those were certainly not bad losses and Georgetown was able to turn things around and pick up plenty of quality wins in Big East play.
2013 Record: 13-4-2
Coach: Brian Wiese
Good Results: 10/9 at Providence (1-0), 10/26 at Marquette (1-0)
Bad Results: 10/12 at Xavier (1-2), 11/2 at St. John’s (0-1)
Why They Can Surprise:
On paper this team does not have many weaknesses. They ranked 13th in the nation in scoring offense and second in goals against average. Strikers Steve Neumann and Brandon Allen had another superb season. Neumann tallied 10 goals and 6 assists, while Allen added 11 goals and three assists. The addition of freshman Alex Muyl, who dished out nine assists on the year, has made the Hoyas offense pretty much unstoppable. On the other side of the pitch, keeper Tomas Gomez allowed just eight goals and the defense usually made Gomez’s job quite easy.
Why They Can Surprise:
The odd thing about Georgetown’s season is the fact that six of their nine goals allowed came in just three games. California, Princeton and Xavier all netted two goals against the Hoyas. Most of their other opposition was shutout, but it does raise a couple questions about their defense. This was not just a bad stretch of games either. Georgetown played Cal in August, Princeton in September and Xavier in October. If that little streak continues, the Hoyas will give up a couple goals against somebody in November. But they could easily score three of their own.
