Meyers Leonard, Sophomore, Center, Illinois
Overview:
Meyers Leonard was a top 25 recruit heading into the collegiate ranks for the 2010-2011 season. However, the 7-0, 240 pound center needed some time to develop. Much of his freshman season at Illinois was spent gaining strength and it is that combination of size and strength that will get him drafted when he sets his sights on the NBA.
On a team that featured Mike Tisdale and Mike Davis, even if Leonard was a polished big man, he would have trouble finding the floor. As a result Leonard only averaged 8.2 minutes per game. However, even in that limited action, Leonard averaged 2.1 points, 1.2 rebounds and showed flashes of being a solid shot blocker and overall defensive nuisance in the paint.
Final Projection:
Leonard is full of potential, but at some point he needs to turn that potential into production. With Davis and Tisdale gone, Leonard will be asked to do a lot during the 2011-2012 campaign. If he can live up to his hype and potential and continue to develop his game, Leonard’s NBA draft stock will soar. If it flies high enough, do not be surprised if Leonard spends just one more year with the Illini before heading off to the NBA.

Leonard is one of the more intriguing players in the draft. He is 7’0” and you cannot teach size. He had some great performances for Illinois last year, but also showed some lapses in judgment. He is very green at this point. In order to be a quality NBA player he will have to put on some muscle. Teams will look at the future possibilities with this kid and jump all over him. He should go somewhere between picks 10-20.
