Grading Men's Basketball's New Coaches

Minnesota Men's Basketball Head Coach Richard Pitino

Grading Men's Basketball's New Coaches

2013-14 saw a proliferation of many new college basketball coaches and we will take a look at a few of them with grades as to how they are doing as of February 5th.

Richard Pitino – Minnesota. The son of the great Rick Pitino really has it going at Minnesota. True, Tubby Smith left him players, but sitting at 15-7 with a win over Ohio State has exceeded even the wildest expectations. He is also doing amazing work on the recruiting trail. Grade A

Chris Casey – Niagara. His team sits at 6-17, but they are showing progress and have an impressive win over Davidson. Grade D

Greg Herenda - Farleigh Dickinson. They are 8-4 with limited talent, but do own wins over Rutgers, Seton Hall and Davidson. Grade C

Mike Brennan – American. The former Princeton star has implemented an interesting offense which, in part, is the reason that his team is 14-7. Grade A

Bobby Hurley – Buffalo. A tough place to win at and Hurley has his team playing well at 11-7, with an upset win over St. Bonaventure. He will recruit New Jersey well. Grade A

Eddie Jordan – Rutgers. One of the reasons that a school should wait to hire an AD before a coach. Jordan was hired before Julie Hermann. He was a mediocre NBA coach and seems out of place at Rutgers, the school in which he starred as a player. His team is awful on the road and he has made some head scratching comments in press conferences, including not knowing who Shabazz Napier was after a home loss to UConn. Grade F
