Chay Shegog WNBA Draft Profile

Chay Shegog, Senior, Center, North Carolina

 North Carolina Team Page

Overview:

Even though she did not start a game during her freshman campaign at North Carolina, center Chay Shegog was an extremely important player on that team. The 6-5 center was fifth on the squad with 7.2 points per game and third with 4.4 rebounds. Perhaps more importantly, Shegog proved to be a natural shot blocker and even in limited playing time averaged 1.2 per contest. The following season Shegog stepped into a starting role and was asked to do more work in the scoring department and on the glass and she did both, averaging 8.9 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Shegog’s rebounding numbers dipped during the 2010-2011 campaign, but that was mostly due to emergence of some other post players on the Tar Heels. She was still the team’s main interior scoring threat and continued to play quality defense.

Final Projection:

Shegog is not a natural scorer, but she is certainly efficient. Once she gets the ball under the basket in a decent scoring position, she is likely to finish the play and get a bucket or at least get fouled. Her lack of flash has even resulted in Shegog getting overlooked on her own team, but she is a tough player who will do the dirty work under the basket and could put up bigger numbers if North Carolina needed her to fill that role.
